Puzzle of Communication
In leadership we are in constant dialogue and discussion. Both of these are different if you follow the root of the words. Dialogue is about exchanging of information back and forth to collectively inquiring to learn more. Discussion is about making a decision, and often making a personal advocated point. Discussion can be jarring (similar root as CONCUSSION) where dialogue can be collaborative. Dialogue can often allow everyone involved to put the pieces of a puzzle together. Discussion can often have a sense that the puzzle for certain people is already together they just want you to see how they did it.
When leaders ask questions in dialogue they are seeking to learn how to commune with others on an equal playing field.
When leaders ask questions in discussions they often are seeing how their point can beat your point.
